About Us

Information about the Department.

Who we are

We are the Department of Health and Ageing.

We lead the development of Australia's health and aged care system by providing expert policy advice, analysis and other services to Government.

We’re a big ideas department and health and ageing are two of the most exciting areas of government to work in. We develop policies and implement big programs that touch every Australian. Our vision is better health and active ageing for all Australians.

We provide advice to our Ministers on an enormous range of policy and program issues, from HIV / AIDS awareness to obesity and nutrition, infectious disease control, pharmaceuticals, aged care and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

The department employs around 5000 staff, with about two-thirds working in Central Office in Canberra. For more information about how we are structured go to the Department of Health & Ageing homepage.

We measure our employees' satisfaction and engagement annually and have great results often above the APS average and in some areas even better than the private sector averages.
