This volume is the first of two, designed to assist in the evaluation of the National Tobacco Campaign (NTC) - a major initiative launched in 1997 aimed primarily at assisting smokers aged 18-40 along the road to quitting.

As a mass-media led campaign, the National Tobacco Campaign is the most intense and longest running anti-tobacco campaign ever seen in Australia. The first phase began in June 1997 and ran until November that year, further phases of activity occurred over 1998 and 1999.

The report is based on surveys evaluating the first phase of the campaign, conducted throughout Australia in May 1997 prior to the campaign launch and in November-December 1997 after the first five to six months of the campaign. A weekly continuous tracking survey was also undertaken in one capital city. The surveys measured campaign reach and recognition, smoking prevalence, beliefs, attitudes and behaviour.

The report also outlines research conducted with people who telephoned the national Quitline in the first month of the campaign, and research with other groups such as culturally and linguistically diverse communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and young people.

Further information on the National Tobacco Campaign can be obtained from the campaign website.
