Review of Health Technology Assessment in Australia (HTA Review)

Report of the Review of Health Technology Assessment in Australia

The Minister for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon, and the Minister for Finance and Deregulation, the Hon Lindsay Tanner, have welcomed the report of the Review of Health Technology Assessment in Australia (HTA Review). The HTA Review has recommended key improvements to the way new health technologies, procedures and services are assessed for public and private funding in Australia, in line with international best practice. The media release is also available.

Implementation of HTA Review Report Recommendations

The Government has committed to implementing 13 of the 16 recommendations from the HTA Review. Recommendations 13, 14 and 15 are the subject of further Government consideration.

Planning, preparation and design of each of the accepted recommendations has begun. A number of recommendations are due for implementation during July 2010, including Recommendation 6 (Establishment of a Single Entry Point) and Recommendation 9 (Streamlining and strengthening MSAC’s operations), which will coincide with the public launch of a new HTA website (Recommendation 4) following stakeholder consultation on the website, in accordance with the requirements of the recommendations.

A phased approach to implementation is being adopted, whereby improvements to current systems will progressively occur in stages following the initial changes made in July 2010.
