Better health and ageing for all Australians

High performance

Information on high performance and a link to the Australian Sports Commission who are responsible for delivering high performance programs.

The achievements of Australian athletes over recent years have been outstanding and a source of great national pride, helping to unite Australian communities. The number of Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games medal winners combined with world champions and placegetters far exceeds the achievements of other nations of comparable population.

Australia can justifiably claim a model high performance sports system. Increasingly, other nations are looking at the Australian experience. However, to maintain its international reputation as a leading sporting nation, Australia will need to work even harder to maintain its current level of success.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has responsibility for delivering high performance programs to meet the Government's objectives of supporting Australian athletes, their coaches and support staff as they compete in a large number of high performance sports. These events include sports represented at the Olympics, the Paralympics, the Commonwealth Games and various World Championships.

The ASC achieves this through a range of programs including Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship programs (involving 26 sports), the AIS Athlete Career and Education program, The High Performance, Innovation, Management and Systems program and the High Performance Success Program.

For more details on the ASC see its website (http://www.ausport.gov.au). For information on AIS scholarships use the link to the right of the page or visit the AIS website (http://www.ais.org.au).
